If not, Ben'Dar will practice his ship siege weapon skill. (He will make sure that whatever ship we choose has a mangonel or ballista or something) GM: Ack. Sadly the merchant ships in this area are just merchants. The biggest weapon they have are hand held personal weapons. Care to change your plans? From Kell: [Re: Training] Kell can and will train others with the Shield since no else publicaly responded, or in merchant, rhetoric, acting skills. Or start someone with smuggling as there is not enough time to learn all of it. Kell suggests we all speak Katai as much as possible, and if Unali (or Zhou) can give culture/overall teachings on Katai for those that want it. Depending oh how things work out, Kell may ask for Archery training. He doesn’t know how to use a bow. Would like to learn Unarmed Combat. [OOC] How do you all usually handle magic? Do you ever cross- train each other? For the cover story, Kell is planning to be the merchant in whatever scheme and details we finally pick. Kell’s alias, well, I am up for suggestions. I’m thinking maybe “Swan” of “Swan and Talm Trading”. Raban can be Mongo. “Let’s give him to Mongo! If not Raban then someone big and mean looking can be Mongo. Or not. GM: Ack. Language and culture education is possible on ship from at least 4-5 sources. Let me know what you want to do. "may ask" and "like to learn" unarmed combat is a bit unclear. :) So it seems more wishful thinking than doing. Basically just let me know what you want to learn skill wise. There are plenty of folks here it should be easy to learn just about anything. If not I'd let you know it was impossible. As to magic. Yes, folks train each other and it takes the normal length of time with instruction and such. Will mark you as Merchant in roster. When you decide on a alias let me know if you want one. Both are fine with me. But it is up to you. :) From Raban: [Re: Skills/Reply to Kell] GM: Ack. Don't want to reveal any secrets unless someone does try to detect what your wearing. But I see the suggestion on teleport, the leaving all items and taking a prisoner back to study. But what is this one item? I may have missed it. From Fremea: [Re: Actions] Fremea has been quiet for a long time as everyone talks about... GM: Ack. From Fremea: [Re: Items to take] Fremea will not bring any of her magic in the wagon, however it will come on the boat and be hidden. If she can figure out a way to keep her armor close that would be good. Other wise, she will make sure that there is a spot (within her teleport range) to leave her stuff, so it will not be disturbed (probably up high). She will hide her sword and dagger with her, as they are not magical, just special metal. GM: Ack. Noted. Dagger should be easy to hide. But a sword on a child might be hard to explain. So might have to hide in the wagon or such later on. From Raban: [Re: Actions] Raban grins, "I am sure I could play the role of Mongo .... GM: Ack. From Kiet: [Re: Actions] Kiet says, "I still think the best thing we can do for Fremea... [When the fugitives were men they could get along on foot, but the frequency with which women and children were found in escaping parties, and the need of rapid transit the business of the Road increased, and pursuit became more common, led to the use of covered wagons, closed carriages and deep-bedded farm wagons for day service. A few enterprising abolitionists of Ohio had vehicles of special construction, though innocent in outward appearance, in which a load of refugees could be taken on long journey with comparative safety. ABRAM ALLEN, a Quaker of Oakland, Clinton County, Ohio had a large, three-seated curtained wagon built about with drawers in such a way as to leave a hiding place in the center. As the bookbinder drove through the country he found opportunity to help many fugitive on his way to Canada. HORACE HOLT of Rutland, Meigs County, sold reeds to his neighbors in southern Ohio. He was the owner of a box-bed wagon with a lid that fasted with a padlock. In this he hauled his supply of reeds; it was well understood by a few that he also hauled fugitive slaves.] - historical note GM: Ack. From Arawn: [Re: Actions] Hearing of Z'leyra's intent to possibly spend time.... OOC: Aside from this, if it is Mana Sensing, unless Scott has a house rule on this, solid barriers block the sensing of mana if using the spell (in the description). There is no mention of this when it is a racial or supernatural attribute ability. Not sure how Scott is running it but if it's the Mana Sensing spell, as written, we should be able to smuggle items in sealed off containers. If not, or if it's innate or an alternate spell, then barriers/containers might not afford any ability to resist magic detection Outside of this, under the descriptions for both abilities it states that - ["When in the presence of mana, or those capable of casting mana, the Character is able to determine its Alignment, Relative Power and, if a spell, basic purpose."]. With this in mind I wonder, other than a shorter range, it seems to indicate that Mana Reading will give the information, even if one doesn't know that there is magic nearby, as long as the person is close. This seems a bit powerful and almost makes Mana Sensing negligible if not for the latter's range. Is this how Mana Reading really should work? I'm thinking that the person should either have to either know magic is present and where or at least be able to target an object or person for detection. Just something I thought I'd throw out to the group and GM for answers. As for Arawn, he's still more than happy to leave equipment behind for now and pick them up when the adventure gets 'hot'. Scott, I have two IBT's depending on whether Arawn spends most of his time in the Citadel or at sea. Once this situation is resolved I can send the appropriate one. GM: Ack. As I've said before magic is so flexible that one can come up with anything. In that regard there may exist a spell to detect magic on a regional level. Look at the Vong detection spell. A specialized spell to detect the absence of magic-life force. A rare arcane magic only known by 2 people. going on that it can be assumed there might be spells to detect spells say on a map. If one were to say teleport in a large ship using the Ship Transport spell for example into a Katai lake it could likely be detected. Once one gets high enough like EL10 or higher one can start to build their own variants to spells through divine will. So research, experiments and the like might solve some things but not reveal 100% of what can be or will be done. I would prefer all go on ship. This assumes Chion even wishes to go back and forth and maybe set off region alarms and the like. But that's your choice to stay behind or not. It will add more work ins oem regards rather than just skipping ahead. So it will delay the mission a bit. But I can deal with it. As long as two who stay know they delay the majority who go. :) So there is no surprise in that regard. Since your IBT might be more than the those on ship. ----------------------------------------------------------------- [New Stuff] [Time: 10:42am - Currently at the meeting...] Ki'ama glances about to see if anyone else has comments or questions for him. The meeting has been going on for a while now and some like the Sidh or Raban feel unease under the do not disturb shield Ki'ama is using. To block out the divine observation must be a powerful ancient spell or just some spell that distracts the gods with something more exciting. Scratching his head a bit, Kell takes a moment and thinks about all that is said so far. Most of it he's never heard before, and while he's been around he knows he's still a bit of an outsider and not as experienced as anyone in the group. "I wasn't there for Lake Oca, and don't really know much about that whole incident. But if there is one Lake Oca, is it possible there is another? Or another location the Vong can grow their fiendish gear?" Addressing Ki'ama, Strie'bog, and Unali he continues, "Do we know any other possible locations like lake Oca? Are there any other mystical places that fit their growing conditions, especially in Katai? Stopping the growing of the Vong's, er, armaments, could be a way to slow the invasion and buy us more time." Ki'ama shakes his head, "This was covered earlier. But I am no expert on bodies of water in Katai. The problem is the powers that be in the government would not permit lakes or such to exist if they were mystical. The people would not stand for it. Now with that said there are doubtless many places that exist with magical or mystical abilities. This could be from a well where a creature lives to a full lake. Those would not be well known beyond the locals within a few miles of such places. So maybe the contact will be able to help there. But I personally do not know of any specific areas they could use. I suspect they might even have the ability to change a normal lake or pond to suit their growing needs." Kell considers the past vote for travel. He figures there could be Katai people who will want to help the Vong for power, glory or wealth. Beyond those who could be affected by magic there might be slaves of the Vong. There was reference earlier of captured prisoners tortured and maybe they could control them through those blue bugs or other animal creations. "I don't relish fighting the Katai, they may not fully know or understand what they are bringing upon all of us. The Vong, well." With that he gives a smile, almost cruel. Or like a merchant about to take a pompous noble for twice an items value. Ki'ama nods slightly, "I would not be surprised if some in Katai are helping them. Power and nobles mix well. If it means the Vong can promise them the empire they will do what they can. Threats and other reasons as well. But which houses and which nobles I have no idea or care to speculate." Kiet sits silently for awhile and considers options for smuggling and hiding magic items. Finally when there is a pause in the conversation he speaks up, "There is a spell, very costly though, that defends against detection intrusion by feeding back mana to the source...it's called a mana bomb. I wonder...what would this do to a detection device? I know what it might do to a person trying to detect magic. It would be dangerous around our Fey friends, however, as it would defend even against their detections." Ki'ama frowns slightly, "such a spell is useful mainly for creatures to stun them maybe like a dragon from what I have read. They would be useful against the Sidh as you say. But there have been known to be variants of the spell to destroy mana itself in the area. So a wizard running low on magical energy hit by such finds himself even weaker. For your purpose the spell would be useful against detection devices. I suspect but can't prove it that it might scramble such devices. But," he raises a finger, "that alone is proof of magic. Any such use would surely alert the locals then you would have more a problem. If you know such a spell you must use it wisely. A distraction method would be more useful than a blocker of magic for example." Kiet says, "While I am confident in my ability to get by any detection, I have to also know I am being examined. While this is possible at the city gates or such, it will not be so if the wandering 'secret societies' are about. I expect I have to leave my items behind...all of them...and I am not especially happy about it!" Ki'ama nods, "a true confident one in skills and magic is those who do not depend on items or weapons. Chion may be the quiet one in this group but by giving up his items he knows his training can overcome such dependency. This mission is one against the Vong invaders but also of oneself to find where you stand with your own confidence. If you can't leave anything behind then maybe you should look inward to understand where your actions come from. Do they come from items on your body or your mind. Here magic is so second hand and common it is instinctive about items. In a place like Marentia it is more a aid in daily life. In Katai you must learn to avoid magic for the need and sake of doing so. This includes magic items. What one takes is a personal choice. If I had say in it I'd take nothing to improve your chances. But even if that was the case the risk is still there. The Sidh and those who know magic innately or have great sources of magical energy within them like Z'leyra are lights to such detection senses. But shields can help there. Each item does build the danger though. Even if things are left behind doesn't mean that Chion couldn't come back for them. But even that could be a risk. I don't know if the Katai have the ability to detect massive spells like a high level teleport or a high level oblivion or such things. I hope they do not and doubt personally they do. But I can't say for certain they don't have the ability." When it seems there is no more questions, Ki'ama stands up again. He nods to Suca who walks to the door and opens it and sticks his head out. Moments earlier Suca had slipped out to warn Oby to fetch Zhou. While Ki'ama waits he speaks up. "If there are no more questions I'll let our new group member know of our plans." Oby walks in and slides his hand on his pants obviously been rustled from running or something. Oby enters the room and is followed by two men. One is Zhou and the other stays along the wall in the shadows for now. Oby stops at the end of the aisle and waves a hand down the aisle for Zhou. Zhou turns and approaches forward smiling. Zhou in his late 30s is normal Katai looking and build. He is wearing his usual bright blue and yellow silks today and looks excited to be summoned here. He gives a half bow to the High Elder. "You called me Master Ki'ama?" Ki'ama smiles and nods, "yes indeed. It seems this group of brave adventurers are heading abroad for a dire mission to save the Dark Lands and the entire middle world." With that Zhou stands tall and glances at the party a bit confused. "In order to infiltrate the land they are going to they need a cover story. They have decided on a noble group. They are heading into Katai." With that Zhou's beaming smile fades and he turns slowly to stare at the High Elder. "They need a noble and Chion here fits but is a bit out of character and seems not to want to play the role. Unali is a good choice but being a female might be harder and she seems not to want the role. So I took the honor of suggesting you." With that Zhou's face becomes pale white as a pearl. He staggers back a half foot and grips a chair to his right where Caladan is sitting. Zhou regains his composure briefly, "me? But I ..." Ki'ama interrupts, "you have spoken of your family ties of years gone by there. You have also spoken of one day leaving on some adventure for honor and glory of your family and the dark lands. Was I wrong?" Zhou shakes his head and stammers, "no...no..but I-" "You have noble blood and as Count here have more training as a noble than any likely here. I wish for you to go and help these people. You will see what was discussed here earlier by our illusion recording." Ki'ama pauses briefly. "Of course if your not fit for this mission or afraid I am sure I could find someone else." Ki'ama turns to the left tapestry and stares for a few moments. Zhou glances to the party and then back at Oby in a icy stare. "Maybe," Ki'ama finally continues, "Count Yir might wish to accept this great honor. Oby-" Zhou stands tall with his honor at stake he speaks up, "no. I will go." Zhou gulps deeply and continues. "I was just not expecting this. For the honor of the lands and if you say it is a mission to save the world then I will do my duty as you graciously suggest." Zhou glances back to Oby to glare at him in a look that says 'you should've warned me you fool I'll not forget this.' Oby and Suca only returns a wry smile. Ki'ama claps his hands together, "great! It is settled. how soon can you leave now? They will need to leave as soon as possible to go to get aboard a ship." Zhou replies, "a ship?...I need to settle things here and get others to take my duties...late this afternoon but would prefer in the morning." Zhou detects a slight frown on Ki'ama face and knows how to read that look. "No, later this afternoon should be fine. I should attend to those matters now." "Excellent," Ki'ama smiles, "but first you should review the mission details. Please take a seat I have new business to attend to." Zhou rushes to the right to find a empty seat next to Z'leyra. Oby waves the figure in the shadow of the back wall forward. As he approaches Oby directs him to where Zhou just stood. He appears to be in his late 20s, stands 6 foot 4 and weighs maybe 180-185 pounds. Physically he doesn't seem strong like some of the fighters here or as handsome as some like Raban. He wears the normal tunic and pants most around here seem to like. But he seems to have custom made buckskin leather armor and gloves. Even his boots are made with buckskin. A cloak flows behind him but makes him out of place with his woodsman look. From initial impression he looks like a Vassa or any normal forest hunter who lives off the land. Only an hour later when he meets up again with the party outside does it become clear he uses a longbow, wears a buckskin hat and has various daggers around his body. But in this manor house his hat and weapons are removed. Outside it will later be revealed he has a donkey. The man stops a few feet from Ki'ama and stands quietly and stares forward. From his face it looks stone hard and well weathered from being outside too much. He doesn't seem to even acknowledge those around him. To a few who are perceptive it seems like a son approaching a father about to be upset with him and about to be punished. Yet this man is quiet and confident. "This," Ki'ama starts up, "is Will. He is a skilled hunter and woodsman. It might not look it but he is also the skilled artist from what I've heard. The reason I have called him here is that he has recently found himself into some troubled times. Like Kiet I heard of his troubles and sent for him here. I have talked with others we both know and all agree that for now it might be best if he were to join this group. Oby has already informed him this morning about Katai and he has agreed to help the group. He has traveled south including the great forests of Choshai and might be of some help as a guide among other talents." The hunter finally looks around the room and at others. When he notices some like Arawn and Fremea a brief sign of grief is noticed but fades. When he notices the others like Raban, Farseeker and Ben'dar a brief glimmer of regret shows but fades just as fast. He briefly glances at the women but shows no sign of attraction or interest. Ben'dar stares back and seems to like the man's buckskins. Many on the plains also dress like him but not as hot climate looking. Kiet nods in return but wonders what could bring this man into the group. Of course just a few weeks ago he was a marooned man and joined this group when a secret cult thought him best dead. Strie'bog smiles back seeing what most in Vassa seem to look like and a bit of home comes to him. "I," Ki'ama continues, "wish for you to keep him safe for me. After the mission he may want to return here or travel elsewhere. But for now I feel he should leave. He might be of use to the party in some fashion. He has been known to be a bit hot tempered like Ben'dar, quiet in thought like Chion but also dangerous as Unali. On ship he can go into detail of his skills if he wishes. As with Kiet I found you took the acrobat in well so do this for me and take him just as well as a personal favor to me." Oby clears his throat and signals Ki'ama. "Yes. Always the hen mother. Oby reminds me I have a meeting in a few minutes with someone else. Are there any more questions or comments I should ask? Zhou and Will can stay here and watch the illusion recording of our meeting. So they can hear it all and be acquainted with everything up to this point. Oby will escort you out to a brief lunch if needed. Don't forget if you need tactics on fighting the Vong see Suca and he can give you brief demonstration. I am sad I seek outsiders to help against this great plague to our world. For political reasons I am limited in some ways by doing this but I feel your the best for this mission. If you fail the whole middle world could be doomed. Sure it might take years for them to do anything but once they get a strong hold their animal technology will be troublesome and dangerous no match for even the Dark Lands. The threat might not be immediate but years from now it will be. I am honored that at least Chion is in this group to represent our people. Yet to have Unali fight maybe her own people is hard to see as well. Hopefully the true enemy will be the Vong and not the Katai. Oby will help you from now on." He glances to the party to see if there are any more questions or comments. He waits a brief few minutes. When none seem to come he hits a jewel on his throne chair and something snaps, likely the illusion recording. Then he hits another and the thrum that throbs in the Sidh and Raban's head seems to end. The shield blocking divine eyes must be down. With that Oby directs the party out. Leaving Will and Zhou to soon study the recording which is very elaborate. Complete with everyone in a ghostly form sitting in their chairs talking just as they did minutes earlier. Last to leave is Ki'ama and Suca. As the meeting soon comes to end, Raban comes near Kell for an introduction. "I have been remiss in not properly introducing myself. I am Raban Usherwood, Bard of Miryan of the Court of Cernunnos. I was born in Xian, which is considered part of Donara. My mother was the Great Dancer, Areta Usherwood, of the ...well its best I do not say which company we were with. When the time came for me to leave the company, I wandered in the hills of the Artad Confederacy for a while, learning what I could and entertaining those I was with. It was there I met an Elven Bard and she decided to teach me many things and I taught her much in return. Since then I have wandered where ever my goddess lead me, helping those that needed it, teaching where I could and entertaining the high and low... Well to shorten the story, this lead to my entertaining in Marentia, at a place called The Green Eye Tavern. It was there I met the others, over a little altercation which injured one of the ladies. I, of course, could not stand by and let that happen and stepped in to help. A jealous noble also chose that time to interfere and I did not have time to soothe his ruffled feathers or teach him what he really needed to know. I had to get a little rough and knock him out so I could help the ladies. Well that also meant it was time to move on to a new place that needed my help, and providence had shown me these lovely ladies could use someone to defend them for a while. So I took that job upon myself. Surprisingly Ki'ama also had a need for entertainers and I volunteered for that as well. No Bard could turn down a chance to travel so far and see such wonders...." "I," Raban continues in a bit more strained voice, "really need to work on that and turn it into a proper story form, but there are so many secrets involved that I have not come up with a way to tell it properly. Perhaps you will be one I can tell it all too at some point. Its sad really, a Bard is Allowed the Lawful Lie, but I cannot write myself into that story as the hero when I did so little in reality. At best I made the ladies harder targets until the attackers fled. In some of the later problems I did better of course, but there are secrets involved again making it difficult to write. I think I am going to need to generalize it, removing most the particulars, maybe give the others the standard roles that come close to them as found in so many stories. Turn it into some sort of Morality Play or Teaching Story. But so far that has felt like I am cheating them out of fame they deserve. It may be years before I can tell it properly." ------------------------- [Time: 11:45am - Later after the meeting...] Oby shows those who need to study culture info to the library while showing the others who need food and drink to a eating area. For others he helps led them outside into the Citadel grounds. Later outside after the meeting with the High Elder, everyone talks over skills, experience and future plans on the upcoming mission. Kiet is the first to speak up asking for help, "Would anybody in our group be able and willing to teach me the proper use of shield and mace while we sail? While I have some abilities with dagger and javelin, I think I need to learn these things too in order to improve my survivability...especially shield. In return I could help teach the very basics of seamanship, ocean survival, or perhaps some other skill." Farseeker turns toward the acrobat, "Kasha is one of our best shield users. But since he isn't here not sure who knows it as well as he did. I use mostly two handed weapons so no room for shields." Kiet continues, "IF not mace, then fighting spear? If not fighting spear, then war staff?" Caldan speaks up, "Ben'dar could help with spear fighting if he has time. I can teach war staff if you desire it." Ben'Dar nods, "I can teach you how to fight with a spear. " Z'leyra mentions, "I can try to teach folks such skills as Artist; Cooking; Jeweler; Great Sword; Hand Ax; War Staff. Best bring a spare practice weapon of each type. There are some skills I would also like to learn." Kiet listens to everyone and tries to figure out who knows what and who might be best to teach him some skills. "While I have not yet seen these Vong, from how they are described makes me think the best weapons to use against them are not edged, but concussion. ..like maces and hammers...the way we break crab and lobster shells..." Farseeker taps his great sword on his hip, "Given enough brute force a rock can kill anything. But piercing weapons would help against these Vong things. High Elder Ki'ama did mention Suca can show us a demonstration on what best points to kill them are located. I suspect like they mentioned the armpits, head and legs are the most vulnerable spots." "What about crossbow?" Kiet asks. "Good armor piercing ability. Polearms?" Farseeker, "We didn't get much chance to use things like arrows on them at the lake. I believe Thig got some darts against them but they were magically boosted. So I suspect crossbows or things like the composite bow Caladan has on him, might work. Ben'dar and I have used polearm type weapons but their staffs are just as long. So one has to consider how close to get to them." Kiet nods, "I don't expect to get within 30' of one of them without some weapon with better reach than a knife!" Farseeker strokes his chin, "Well only the warriors tend to use the snake-staff weapons. The one Jordi found with the head snake helmet-thing didn't have one. So those can be killed at much shorter range." As the party gathers outside in the hallway near the inside manor fountain, Ha'kell finds Oby. The trader asks about Katai culture and economic system. Oby repeats what Ki'ama said that they have books in the library for review but they should remain here. They can be studied until the party leaves. Otherwise, Zhou, Unali and Chion can help in other culture aspects. As to various goods and services, Oby speaks about that. "Lemasa and Choshai are close to Katai so they trade often enough. Choshai does some dealing in weapons but for the most part their timber industry is huge for obvious reasons of their vast forest. Lemasa likes finished goods, textiles, fine crafts, fine goods, spices, salt, drugs and medical related supplies. Katai does agriculture for obvious reasons of their vast farms and industrial manufactured items. Katai and Lemasa do have the only resource in common that of metals and fine metals." Oby turns to everyone, "as a reminder books on Katai culture can be studied in the library when you are ready. Just let me or the other folks here know and they will escort you to the library here in the manor." After listening to many of his friends talk about skills to teach or learn on the trip, Raban decides he should mention what he knows... "I expect most already know some of this but some my not so... I am a master of Long Bow and Hand to Hand combat but my other weapon skills are only barely trained since I rarely use them. I am a Master of many Musical Instruments, Acting, Acrobatics and Dance, though my Dancing will one day surpass all the others. Had I not grown so much, I could have surpassed my Mother's dance skill as I promised her so long ago, but events made that difficult for me to focus on...I am also a master of Survival in many places and quite skilled in others, as that was important to a traveling Bard. I am a Master in how to care for Forests and Hills. I am skilled in use of wagons and draft horses, including how to properly care for the horses. I am quite skilled in Tanning and how to find Secret things. I am almost a Master in massage and finding useful herbs for that. I am a passable Smuggler, Merchant, Bowyer, Fletcher and can even make my own clothes and cook." Raban continues, "I am also a Master of Climbing, Tracking and Swimming. I think that covers most of what I could teach or help people with. Some of that would be difficult to teach on a ship I would think, but plenty can be done." "I," Raban glances at everyone in turn "am sure my skills were fairly obvious, as they are all things a troop of traveling entertainers or Bard should learn or things someone of my size would need. I would be interested in training in those skills I have not mastered yet or even new ones... I would also be interested in learning new spells but that could be a problem if we do not want anyone to know about our magic skills? Oh, this could be important too. I do know quite a bit about Disguise, since it was useful in Acting and other Stage performances. I have not used it much in years since I out grew so many roles. But it could be useful on this mission, depending on what roles people will be playing." Later Kell suggests Mongo to Raban. Raban replies, "Mongo? That is an interesting name, Kell, I do not place its origin. Was this Mongo someone of my size and strength? How did he act, his personality and mannerisms? If you knew Mongo well enough, I should be able to learn how to play him if you think he would suit my role in the mission." Blue eyes sparkling in mirth Ha'Kell responds, "He was a very large, strong, and not particularly bright enforcer I encountered. Luckily he was on my side, or I might not be here now. He could show profound wisdom in spurts, but overall was not the sharpest sword in the rack. He followed orders very well. One rumor had him yawning and stretching and accidentally breaking the chains he was tied with. I don't know where he was from, but he was always called Mongo. I did see him knock out a horse with a single punch once." At the last comment, Z'leyra and Ben'dar turn to glare at Kell. To knock out a horse to them is just cruel. Ben'dar would personally kill one who touched Tef'wo like that. Raban grins at Kell for his Mongo suggestion, "I am sure I could play the role of Mongo easily enough if that's the type of role the mission needs. But particulars will need to be worked out with the others if it is all to work out. Playing a role for the stage is much easier than 'wearing' the role day by day, I have the training that the other lack in that regard. But its best if the player fits the role closely enough to make it harder to foul up... As to body art, I entertain ladies of all castes and stations, I would not want anything to interfere with that. The art would need to be of the best quality and I wonder if such would actually detract from the role? Perhaps I need to ask my goddess what she would like? But once more that is in the particulars of the role, what to wear, how to act and such." Farseeker looks up at the giant, "my large friend will not fit in Katai. So any disguise you choose will simply still show your...unusual size. You will tower over all and be likely 3 or 4 times bigger than everyone. So a disguise I think for you is just a waste of time. A bodyguard, entertainer, hired bard if such exist or servant suits you best as you are. Maybe a servant like a butler for Zhou that isn't so bright. If the guards think you stupid they will be more at ease. After all that is likely the first impression they will have of you. So a drooling, slob of a guard seems to fit best for you." When Kiet mentions the lack of planning out loud, Ha'Kell chimes in, "I'm planning on leaving all magic items wherever we have our cache. Assuming Chion may teleport back to get the cache before any large, known battles. We can bring them on the ship and pay the ship to stay in port for easy access later? I will definitely play the merchant, for obvious reasons. Master Swan of 'Swan and Talm Trading' at your service," with a flourish and a bow, "How can I be of service? Why yes, that is for sale. How gracious of you to ask." "Any wandering," Kell continues, "‘secret society’ members we encounter I am hoping to talk our way through. I’ll try at least. I make my living convincing people of things. I have several ideas on this already and can practice them, possibly even using the fake detectors on our wagon and gear." Kell whispers harshly and looking down his nose, eyes flashing in anger and arrogance, "You insolent fool! Do you know who we are and why we are here? If our masters find out you tried to stop us, you and your families will disappear tomorrow. Let us pass now and I'll conveniently forget to mention this when we arrive. Leave now before I have Mongo take what we want from you," dismissing the imagined people with an arrogant wave, feigning turning his back. Looking around warily, sneakily approaching, "Of course we have magic, just as you do. You arrogant peasant, you’ll give us both away. It is in your best interest to not let me detect your magic or I’ll send you off faster than you can scream. Leave us now and there won’t be any problems." Caladan glances over at Kell, "that might work for the majority of guards but if they are nobles themselves and higher station than Zhou then it could be a problem with that line of talk. So we will have to measure our response carefully." Kell nods, "I still do not know who the noble will be, if we will have two, or if we use the influential foreign merchant version. Any of these can work." Farseeker, "Zhou as noble works the best in my view. Chion could cause more suspicion and Unali would fit but most noble females in Katai I suspect don't travel alone." "I," Kell brings up the subject of plans again, "would like to discuss tactics before assaulting any large groups of Vong. My magic is specialized, whilst useful and a bit slow. But it should prove very useful." Farseeker places hand on his large sheath, "plans are simple. We see the beasts, draw our swords and charge." Farseeker glances at Ben'dar and smiles, "Right old friend?" Then he turns back to Kell. "Depending on where they infest plans can be made for assaults but for most actions its as simple as my plan." Raban listens for a while before he thinks of what to say on this confusing topic, "I know magic detection can be blocked but I still do not know how to judge its effectiveness. But I do know one way to find out. I am wearing a few magical items including one that is supposedly hard to detect. Can anyone here tell me what magic I have? And how effective is the hidden one?" Kiet replies to Kell, "The problem is that the people with the mobile detectors will identify us as someone their society, or the Authorities, want to 'deal with.' It's trouble we don't need to borrow..and attention I am sure we would prefer to do without." Ben'Dar growls, "Will our enemies be without magic weapons? If so, then I welcome a fair fight. But I don't want to go into a strange land ill-equipped to drive our enemies before us." Caladan chimes in, "the more people we take off ship into the city the more attention. So for the first parts of this mission that will be a factor. Zhou, the apprentice, a bodyguard and maybe another couple of people. But for the most part folks should remain on ship until we know where the Vong are hiding." Kell replies back to Kiet, "Yes, absolutely true. They’ll see us before we can hide ourselves. With either of those I am trying to imply we’re part of another ‘secret society’ that searches for magic, one that is more powerful than theirs. I can be more blunt if necessary, but I’m hoping we’ll learn more as we get closer to Katai.” “I may even make up a name for it if that will help the bluff. Any ideas?” “If the bluff fails, we'll be fighting." Oby walking nearby hears this and stops, "they are secret for a reason. Claiming you are one such would be as dangerous as saying you have magic. What is to say the government only allows one society in one city or region? If they hear of another that is direct conflict with their power and will thus cause problems. We just don't know the full structure of these groups to know if its one per city or 100 per city. But likely since these groups are a small force it is limited. So I suspect a well placed group with good intelligence, fed by the local noble who might head it, knows of other local groups. So good luck with that bluff." With that he waves a hand and continues on his way to help Zhou on an errand. Fremea has been quiet for a long time as everyone talks about what to do. Her thoughts run all over the issues. Could she be hidden so that no one can tell she is a Fea? Maybe she can be stealthy then and not worry about some of the harder to get out of spots? Can she act like a betrothed? What does a betrothed act like? She knows though that she will have it easier than Arawn. With her long hair it is easy to hide her main features. But for him it will be more an issue. Besides most don't look at kids even in normal places like Katai. "I," Fremea speaks up, "believe that it is best I am a child of the nobleman. That will allow me to escape many eyes, and be invisible, even when I am not. This gives many advantages. If you believe I should act as a betrothed, I shall do so. I have many worries about going there myself with this detection of magics, being that I am magic itself. I will however disguise myself with the aid of our giant bard and it seems a couple of others, so that no one will know of my wings. I will sacrifice my comfort to rid this world of the Vong. As for the travel, it seems others know much better as to which way to go, so I leave it to them. I will learn what I must to survive." Fremea proclaims her shipboard plans, "I wish to practice more of my disguise and acting, so that I may fool even the best actors and unwanted detectives. I can also continue to teach you Raban, on the arts of the arrow spell." Fremea smiles at the thought of Raban looking ugly, though he is fairly good looking for a human. Mungo, interesting name. One she would definitely remember hearing about before. Something about it tells her that it would be one stinky night around a camp fire too. Farseeker standing with arms folded speaks up, "the range of of the detection devices are feet from what I gathered. But the Sidh here can do a far greater distance. I recall Thig saying he could do like 200 feet. So with that in mind it must be line of sight ranges. Since the devices likely have minor spell power it can't be that far a distance. Course seeing what this land does and can do....there could be devices to scan for miles but that would be a rare item I suspect. If they had such devices a society would become the top spot and wipe all out." Oby jogs back into the area having handed Zhou some small cloth bag. He stops near Fremea and smiles. "Your disguise will be quite effective little one. But in Katai you might be a bit too young to betrothed. Just play the noble child and I suspect you'll have no issues. But if you want to play the other thing work with it. Make it an angry marriage arrangement or a happy one. Stuff like that." Raban smiles thinking about his role, "Fremea, with me there as bodyguard, they will not wish to spent too much time checking on you. But I believe it was stated that the divine magics that allow detection of those with innate magics are quite unlikely. And that is quite fortunate as otherwise no disguise would hide us. It may well be that staying out of sight will protect you better than anything else that can be done. And I assure you I will most carefully hide your delicate wings while keeping you as comfortable as possible. But that will not be very easy, we will need to work out what can be done safely. Artistically, I would try for a cloak whose insides matched your wings. One that could be thrown off if you really needed to fly. But if you were in a situation where you needed to take it off, that would expose you. That leaves binding them tight enough to fit under a dress or other clothing which leaves you flightless. Fortunately the right hair and clothing style can cover up what bulges may be left on your back and not mar your beauty. Your role will be one that requires that beauty to be seen, if only briefly. It is reason untoitself for you to be anywhere you wish to be or at least where someone in power would want you to be. One glimpse will be enough to leave no doubt that someone important has sent for you. It also justifies my role, to keep you unsullied by the lowly people who may become too curious. And that reinforces your role again in a nice circle. Only someone of considerable power could hire such a guard so you must be someone untouchable. The key to a believable role is to make everything fit together. And if I have to grunt a barely understandable 'Master say no touch!' if anyone reaches toward you and look like I am ready to kill them for it, your beauty makes that understandable and thus effective. Though I may need to drool and snarl some or otherwise look menacing to improve on it. Sometimes overacting is required in the role so even the most unobservant see it." Oby turns from whispering to Zhou about something and hears Raban talk. He simply smiles and then continues on talking to Zhou about something. Farseeker raises a hand, "Varange used a disguise like that. Way back in Porta. If I could recall the details maybe we could work on some form of it on the ship..." He places a hand to his chin and thinks about the past. "Fremea," Raban continues talking to Fremea without replying to Farseeker's comment right away, "I can teach quite a bit about acting, and some on disguise. I know a lot about how to change someone's apparent sex or age as we commonly had to fill roles for the stage with whoever was available even it they did not look the part. It actually is not as hard as it sounds, people fool themselves into seeing what they expect to see if you give them enough misdirection. Rough appearance and mannerisms is what is first seen. Voice and speech patterns help finish it. Though for a female role, her walk and other motions is what convinces most men of the reality. A girl playing a boy has the same problem, many would notice something was wrong if she was not taught how to walk. But to play a noble you must learn to speak as one and know how to treat those beneath you. To play a commoner being wed to a noble would be different of course. But most human women, even girls, of your beauty are quite likely to be spoiled brats. Raised knowing they were to be wed to power and have power over others in return. They tend to get their way in most things, though rarely in anything of consequence. So there are many things about your role that needs to be worked out so that your background and personality are believable. There is also the other extreme, the delicate flower that has been protected from reality her entire life. This one is usually quite shy and timid. That could be more to the mission needs but maybe harder to play since you are not that way. Anyway the brat is scarier as she may order her guard to kill on a whim or when she gets upset." Behind the giant, Farseeker turns to Ben'dar nearby and raises an eyebrow. Farseeker then mouths the words "Raban as a female?" and shrugs. Ben'dar grins and Farseeker gives a wide smile as well thinking of Raban as a girl in some dress. "I," Raban stands tall glancing at the party, "would enjoy learning more magic but even on the ship that could lead to problems if we are not careful. If we control all aspects of the ship and crew, then that may not be a problem, otherwise rumors will spread in port." Zhou, still startled from his sudden change in life speaks up, "the ship will keep our secrets. They know the dark lands are full of wizards so know magic exists here. They trade with us, Choshai, Lemasa and Katai equally. They know we have more coin than the Choshai so will not ruin that relationship by giving away some rumor in a Katai port." Kiet says, "I still think the best thing we can do for Fremea, if she so chooses, is to simply put her in a curtained wagon or carriage...where she could play the part of the Noble's daughter. She could simply show her face (I think painted for a future wedding?). No guard would DARE search such a vehicle or our noble could throw a hissy fit and make them fear for their lives. One of the other women could be her nurse?" "This way Fremea's wings would be unconfined and she much more comfortable." Kiet finishes up. Farseeker shakes his head, "no it won't work that way. She sadly has to confine her wings. I've gone to far off lands with Thig years past. We've been in cultures where such a person is common and rare. Even where it might be known that a Faerry exists there are those who would freak out and will. Even the chance that she could be seen in the wagon if a guard demands a search is too high a risk. Sadly, it might not be comfortable but she can't have her wings seen. I suspect Katai is a land where such beings are feared. But we will have likely a month of travel to figure out all these things. So we don't have to panic now and figure it out. We will have plenty of time to iron out the details." Raban sighs, "Kiet my friend, you are too trusting for this. The world is a sad place full of intrigue and has quite a few who think rules do not apply to them. Such simple hiding will work for a little while but eventually there will be those who will demand to look further or who will arrange spies to find out more. And a common bypass of your idea is to use women to search the wagon, though most guards will not have access to that method, some can. The most vulnerable time is not in the wagon but outside it! Fremea will have to leave it at times and that is where spies will learn much. On the road or in towns, the risk is much the same. The overly curious or those seeking information for advancement will try to learn more. Then there are the perverse who arrange to view baths or other private places. It will be our jobs to make sure none of those can occur, and not just for Fremea but for anything we may have out of the ordinary. If anyone becomes suspicious they will arrange a means to discover more. The key is to avoid such or plan for it. Fremea and I will be obvious targets of such spies. Me because they will be curious just what kind of monster I may be or whether some spell is involved. Fremea because she is beautiful and hiding so they wish to see more. But anyone can draw further attention and it is best to keep to your role at all times. At first it will not be much of a problem, but the risks will grow the longer we are there." "But there are many ways to deal with those problems. One is for the wagon master or someone else to offer to sell them information or a peek. The corrupt expect corruption and making the offer can be enough to lower the risks. At the worst you arrange for them to see less than they think they saw. In some cases you bribe them to go away, but you must be very sure that is the right response or it leads to more problems. At some point I may end up killing or hurting one of them because they were where they should not be and you will need to pay some fines or bribes as a result. The injury would need to fit the role and how much they may have seen. But such an action is expected, its a risk they take, at least for those who are involved in spying. With luck it will not get that far because if it does we are under a lot of suspicion." "I do not know Katai, so perhaps I am being overly paranoid. But it is best I speak up on what can occur so we can plan around it. Maybe the usual guards will not be a problem at all, but those who hunt magic will not give up so easily if they think we are suspicious... Do not get me wrong, there are honest guards out there, but they tend to be far rarer than most people think. Temptation to abuse those who cannot defend themselves is too much for many people. But mostly it depends on who leads them, if that person has higher morals then the guards will as well as otherwise they are rapidly dismissed. So I would expect the degree of corruption to vary wildly and in most cases a noble traveling would be one they will not abuse directly." Unali stands silent nearby and nods to Raban when he glances over confirming the details. Like any culture corruption exists. With oppression and control there are honest people who will help those oppressed even if it means death. Kiet says "I might have a way to smuggle in magic items. If one of us.. .specifically I am thinking of our giant friend Raban... were enchanted with a Personal Illusion to look like a magical creature, and the cage were said to be magical, we could be delivering the creature to its new home...and all of our magic items could be under the base of that cage." "There are any number of creatures, of various alignments, that could be used for this charade." "If I (or someone) were able to get the 'personal illusion' spell to EL3, then it would last 16 hours...and 32 hours at EL4. I am only EL1 for now (and that would yield but 8 hours). It's just a thought and option." Farseeker shakes his head again, "What is this E L thing?" He flashes a quick grin then continues, "no it would not work. Magic cages is magic and immediate execution would result. Not a good plan, my friend. Those who hunt magic users likely have some permit or papers or bounty they can document why they have magical items around likely only when hauling a magic user for execution." He raises a hand to stop Kiet from speaking. "I know we could forge those things. But they likely have special codes or seals from the local nobles. We would need such things to forge those documents." Nearby separate from the group, Z'leyra has a private talk with Corona on the mission. It is clear Corona doesn't want to go to Katai knowing he could be eaten. But if Z'leyra insists he will go though as Tonah protection that might conflict with views. Soon Z'leyra joins the others and speaks up when the talk dies down. Z'leyra suggests "We have several ways we could proceed. We COULD just leave all our detectable magic behind...but I have my doubts that that would work. I suspect that certain innate abilities might be considered magic enough to get killed over. The ability of Corona to cast fire from his eyes, the mana sensing of the sidh, perhaps other abilities I don't know about. I have wondered, but have not tried to check for whether any of us have what might be considered 'magical' boosts to our abilities. Would these be detectable? Would these be enough to get us killed? Is knowledge of magical skills detectable?" "We should experiment and find out just what and who is detectable and by what means. If the only way to detect mana sensing is via Soul Sight then those with mana sensing should be fairly safe. If having mana sensing sets off all alarms then we may have to figure other ways to proceed...perhaps with some of us fetched via teleport for battling the Vong but safe at some remote location till then." "I haven't even started on our magical gear. I for one want the magic when we fight the Vong. For the magic items I suggest that they not all be put in the same basket. Some could be left here. Some could be transported to whatever safe location could be found by Chion who could fetch them via teleport and I could create an item for Corona to carry that would Oblivion the rest and bring back the items when we need them. Since Corona would not be safe near detection devices anyway I think his being some distant harmless bird while we do get detected will be safer for us all." "I will need a day or two to make and enchant the item. We will need practice weapons of all types since we will have nearly two months to practice while at sea. Good non-magical armor and weapons should be worn or at least available for those our cover story allows to be armed." "Another possibility to consider is for me to stay here and make enchanted armor and weapons for folks while the ship is at sea. My place on ship taken by a reclusive illusion or not being present at all. If Chion teleported Corona and I in when the ship got to port we could have the item Oblivion the magic items and Corona fly with the item to a safe altitude, meeting us after we left the city. This would allow me to make at least one set, maybe two of enchanted armor. I know Raban wants decent armor. Anyone else need or want enchanted armor or weapons?" Farseeker shakes his head again, "who or what is detectable might be a problem for some. I personally don't care. But it is clear from this group." He waves a hand to the party as a whole. "Some might not want their soul scanned for some experiments. As the high Elder suggested for every thing that can be detected it can be blocked likely. It all comes down to skill. Since a society that hates magic likely has few magic masters it can be logically assumed that no high magic spells exist. Thus low level scans would be the case for devices. For every experiment you run there might be alternatives out there. As to staying here, you'd miss all the fun on ship like the waves, lousy food and maybe the occasional sea monster attack!" His smile fades as he goes serious. "It is clear of all the people in this group you depend on your magic too much. Even others have sensed that and mentioned it. To stay to make more items shows that dependency. Maybe magic is like a drug and could be addicting. I don't know. As to using magic against the Vong, my old great sword was damaged twice by simply fighting two of them. If two can do that what will 200 of them do to magic things like your precious staff? Do you want magic weapons damaged when normal weapons could do as much damage and their magic not even be effective? I may not be the smartest one here but I can sense the High Elder expects us to go with no items. Not only to test ourselves but to see how we react without magic. I'm glad to see some like our silent friend here," he waves a left hand at Chion, "throw away that magic knowing their skills and natural abilities will suffice. The detection in Katai as the Elder suggests is for magic items. What we might be or can cast might not be detectable. If so with your high magic experience I suspect you would be a glowing bon fire in a dark night." Ha'Kell thinks for several minutes, then responds to Z'leyra, "Those are some fine ideas. Which will we use? I especially agree with finding out what is detectable and by what means. We need to plan on being detected at some point, and have our plans ready for when it happens. As to magic equipment, a suit of armor would appreciated." Kell then approaches and continues in private with Z'leyra. Hearing of Z'leyra's intent to possibly spend time within the Citadel during the party's sea voyage Arawn spoke up, adding his own desires during that period. "If Z'leyra desires to remain behind working on items for the group then I will keep her company. I have research that I feel would best be done within the relative safety of the Citadel. As for sensing a being's ability to cast magic, Soul Sight is one way but it is not exclusive. Though the ability to sense mana (Mana Sensing) does not detect potential, only active magic, the ability to read such power (Mana Reading) does enable one to detect a being's potential to cast magic. I think it would be good to determine exactly what the majority of sensors are attuned to, to Sense or to Read." Zhou leaves the group to heads to his home in the village to gather up things and delegate his duties. Soon Will joins the party but at a distance after the recording is viewed. He seems quiet and aloof like Chion so for the most part it doesn't worry folks. Caladan does a quick head count and finds 14 will be in this group not including the apprentice which would make 15 for a big group going to Katai. Some have big horses and that will be a large animal group as well for ship. Caladan speaks up, "I will be Ca.Lu, hired Archer protection for our noble leader." Farseeker also adds, "I will be Fu Sa, guard to our noble." Oby smiles and replies, "Zhou will be ready in a few hours. You might not get far today but at least you will have a head start. Time is of the essence here. Good luck. If you need anything in terms of supplies to buy or add let me know." Actions? Comments? Next Update...Friday... GM: Whew! I leave for a week. Return to find 120 game related emails and posts. At least 30 of those are private talks between players behind the scenes. At least 25 posts for the game and it built up to over 1000 lines of this update. I only added 200 lines of new stuff. This might be how it goes with the sheer amount of posting. While its great it just means a lot of format work and such. So by the time I get to the end I don't have time to add new stuff. This isn't saying stop the posting. Just letting you know how it might go. I do have one request when you post reply and quote only what is needed. It was a bit confusing figuring out who was quoting what and what was new and old. I might have lost some posts due to this. This is why I post the first line in the recap section so you can see if your post made it. But some folks are quoting the entire message and so it adds alot of text to wade through. Thanks. GM: Since in those 120 emails it looks like no one has changed votes so we'll continue with the ship noble cover story. Assuming this I will work on the ship details this week and give them in the next update. Hope to have the math down and figure out the exact travel time and such. Still use the 30 days and fluff time for storm and no action days. Of course if folks stay in the DL that means they could have a unfair more IBT time then the others. So I may have to redo that to reflect equal IBT lengths for all. GM: A lot of you posted skills and what to learn and teach. You can also send me those details for the introduction file. Then you won't have to repeat that over and over. GM: You may have noticed the top roster looks changed. First I've added Zhou and the new guy (finally!). I also have below each normal line cover story info. This would be any alias and position you wish to do. This is mainly for my notes and your reference so you know who is what and the like. If you want to add your entry let me know. Otherwise will assume the non-cover story info. GM: Next update I'll move the party out. This is need to get things moving. We could spend literally weeks or months figuring out detection and plans and bog things down. That stuff can still continue as the ship stuff will likely take a couple months or our time. So don't fret on those details. But I best move the game time along for speed of the pbem. GM: Many private conversations going on with 3 separate groups. I enjoyed the CCed stuff. Keep in mind though since it was private folks don't see it and if you had intent to share stuff like tactics (and there was good stuff in those emails) then should post it publicaly. But private is still fine as long as you know folks will not know what your talking about since it was private "don't you recall I said the best way to kill ..." :) GM: Homework - tsk tsk. Not many did it. Shame shame. :) On magic items to take or leave did get info from Kiet, Chion. and Fremea. I think I got something from Kell as well. For IBT I got some stuff from Kell and Kiet I believe. I've not studied those emails but that's not much from the overall group. :) But there will be time. The deadline for magic items to leave should be a week or two. For the IBT maybe a month but keep in mind the longer the delay the harder it is in some regards for encounters and such. Once I know what might be the first ship combat encounter I might be in trouble in regards to what your character has done to that point. So in that regard IBT is good so I can perform all that stuff until the first encounter. Its a ton of work so hopefully folks will do it soon and not be volumes of stuff. :) Hopefully next week I should know when the first encounter will take place. But I understand folks are busy. So there is no rush on this if your busy you can't do it. With these many folks some are busy and others will take up the slack. For now this is a huge update and I'm exhausted. So enough for now. I will not pressure folks to get things done that can be accepted for awhile yet still.
